Welcome to our next installment of Whistle Blasts as I try to chronicle plays, rulings, and answer questions from officials, players, and coaches that ave come across my desk. The purpose of these documents to help educate us all on the nuances of the rules and help us be better officials and all be on he same page. One Rule, One Interpretation!

  • No reset of bonus when going to overtime as it is an extension of the 4th quarter
  • We must have coaches at the captains meeting.
  • Review apparel document located on our website and members area of iaabo.org as we still can’t seem to get it right.
  • Division line throw-in violation…stays a division line throw-in.
  • End of game situations must have good clock awareness…keep a mental count just in case the clock doesn’t start or stop too soon
  • When making calls outside your PCA, especially in Co3 – if you are going to Be Late, Be Right and Be Needed!
  • Blood Rule – Officials must direct players to leave the game when any of the following occur, UNLESS the issue can be rectified within 20 seconds…player is bleeding, player has an open wound, player has blood on their person, player has any amount of blood on their uniform. A time out may be used to keep player in the game if the situation is corrected.
  • INJURY – When a player is injured and unable to immediately resume play or injured to the extent that the coach or bench personnel are beckoned or come onto the court, the injured player must be replaced unless a timeout is granted and the situation can be remedied by the end of the time out.
  • Last-second shot…ball is not released in time – whistle is blown….violation before ball is released – whistle is blown…ball released before the horn, horn ends the period – NO whistle is blown because it it alerts people to think some infraction may have occurred.
  • Switch on all fouls
  • BI for slapping the back board and vibrating the rim. There is NO whistle if the ball goes in – IAABO clarification
  • Shoot technical fouls in the order they occur especially when a personal foul occurs. A1 is fouled on a try followed by a dead ball technical for cursing…shoot the personal foul followed by the technical foul…nobody lines up on any of the foul shots…play resumes with a division line through in opposite the scorers table
  • Dunking pre-game – penalize as a team foul towards the bonus…it is NOT charged to the player or coach. It is a team technical foul.
  • Foul out procedure – notify the coach, then inform the timer to start the 15 second interval for replacing the player, then notify the player. It is advised that the non-ruling official does this process especially if the situation could be contentious…IRG 13:4 page 305.
  • This year Lyons home games are at the high school where there are restraining lines along the side line. On throw-ins no one can be within that restricted area except the player doing the throw in. No one can receive pass in the restricted area, and the ball cannot be bounced within the restricted area on the inbounds pass. These are all throw in violations.
  • Basket Interference/Slapping the Backboard – when a defender jumps to block a shot, blocks or gets a partial block of the ball and still slaps the backboard causing it to vibrate and the ball is on or within the basket, touching the backboard, or within the imaginary cylinder above the rim, it is BI. It has nothing to do with the ball having a chance to go in as that nothing to do with it….that is part of the goal tending rule.
  • Fit Bits and watches are not to be worn as they are not part of our uniform.
  • Keep this in mind as you prepare for games … “what you allow is what you endorse.”
  • Blow the whistle the players will adjust!
