CONDOLENCES: Long-time Board 60 member George T. Steitz passed away on November 14. He was 101. The cause was not released in his obituary.
George was a prominent figure in Section V Athletics, the Penfield community, and Board 60, having been a member for decades … longer than most of our members have been alive!! He fought in World War II, was the first high school coach in the country to win 400 soccer games, throw in more than 450 baseball wins, throw in hundreds more in softball/baseball and George finished with 1,325 wins — which placed him in the Guinness Board of World Records.
The Rochester Business Journal reported that he also made a name for himself as an official, working more than 7,000 games, including many with Board 60. George was a fixture at our banquet and also holds the Board 60 record for longest banquet speech. He has also been inducted in many Hall of Fames and has been profiles in the news countless times, including a spot with ABC’s David Muir.
George was kind and he was involved. Board 60 members are encouraged to wear their black wristbands in member of George. The entire crew should wear them or not at all. The Board will send out a note to family with our condolences.
George’s service and celebration of life will be postponed until spring time with a date to be announced later. Those wanting to share a story or memory on George should visit: https://jenningsnultonmattlefh.com/tribute/details/4070/George-Steitz
